Guatemala, a country in the North of Central America, has about 10.000.000 inhabitants: 70% Maya, 28% “ladinos” or “mestizos” and 2% Creoles, descendants of the Spanish invaders, arrived there in 1524.

A minority of people (landowners, Army officers, politicians, industrials, bankers, the most of them descendants of the invaders) are incredibly rich, they own the most of the lands and the military and political power, while the most of the inhabitants (2/3), the natives, live in an extreme misery.

The increasing misery caused by the new-liberal economy, by unemployment and hunger, makes many peasants, the poorest in the earth, fly to the towns where they live in slums near the ravines.

Today, in a time said of “peace and democracy”, the Army continues to control the country and does not accept to put on trial the guilty fellows of the crimes against mankind in 80 years. This genocide did not break the opposition of the Mayan people and of the popular classes, which keep in organising and fighting.
